Moving, and considering the following school districts: Chadds Ford-Union, West Chester and Great Valley. We need to be near some good music instructors for string instruments and piano and also want a school with a good orchestra program. Any suggestions?

All of these school districts are fantastic. Great Valley and chadds ford-unionville are some of the best school districts in the state, west chester not far behind. They are have strong music programs, i know chadds ford-unionville is very strong. All of these school districts are relatively close to each other, all very nice suburbs located in chester county. You can find more information on the school district websites online, or contact the schools as well. Feel free to ask more questions.

Thanks for your help! I'm going to start watching the school websites now that the schools are back in session. I realize the Chadds Ford district has a great reputation on ranking etc, but it's good to hear that they also have good extra curricular programs like music too. I don't want to limit my house hunt to just one area. CPOMP.....how about the Rose Tree district? I noticed that Media was your location.

Unionville Chadds Ford offers a wide variety of sports, clubs, and organizations, at the high school and middle school level, elementary to a smaller extent, but in all aspects you cannot go wrong with any of the 3 districts you asked about, but especially chadds ford. Rose Tree Media is also an excellent school district, probably smaller than all of the others ones, especially west chester. Media has a big family vibe going on, the schools are more close knit than the other districts you mentioned. Penncrest high school does have marching band, orchestra, jazz band, and drum line, and color guard, they have a pretty extensive music program. Springton Lake middle school also offers the orchestra, and jazz band. The music program starts in elementary school level, and accelerates as you go up in grades, as most music programs do. All of the districts you mentioned are again fantastic on all levels, academic, extra curricular, music, etc. The areas are a bit different. Media you will have a nice downtown with dining and small shops with a pretty vibrant nightlife restaurant scene, Media just offers that extra something special, that makes it stand out at least in my opinion. The other suburbs are farther away from philly and more spread out, not as built up. Home prices also vary, media and chadds ford, and great valley being the most expensive, west chester a little more affordable. Feel free to ask more.

How about Media taxes versus Chadd's Ford? I've learned about the different townships etc and how taxes can vary within the Chadd's Ford area, is it similar in Media?

Thats a tough call. Media in the immediate vicinity of the township/borough the taxes are more reasonable because of the very large business base in the area, however once you get outside of Media, towns like upper providence, Middletown, Edgemont, the taxes are higher, especially upper providence. Those towns are all still in the same school district, and under the same zip code as media, aside from edgemont. I would generally say that the media area has higher taxes than chadds ford, but again as you said it varies because both districts cover such a large area.

Need to commute to Concordville, would any of these areas that we've been discussing be particularly difficult over the other? Thanks for all of your help!

No, all of the areas you mentioned are very close with an easy and direct commute. Media would be the longest with about 15-20 minutes, really no big problem and very direct. West Chester would be about the same coming from the opposite direction. Traffic in the 202 route 1 area can be heavy at times, but you will have no problems.
