Just announced a few hours ago, more concrete plans as to what is going on with the Philly Live! complex down by the stadiums.

Well for starters it's going to be called Xfinity Live! as Comcast and NBC Sports will be major backers of the complex.

Should include multiple, bars, restuarants, a "beer hall", an athletic field of some type, a giant video screen, etc

more details here:http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/t...illy-Live.html

i'd probably avoid the comments, the negadelphians are out in force as usual at philly.com

Also apparently this will all be done by April

I really love what they're doing but to call it XFinity Live is flat out wrong.

That Sports Complex is not theirs. They may own the Flyers, the Center, and the lot where the Spectrum once stood as well I'm sure... but they do not own the Sports Complex. Not to mention the fact that it is the fans who are the only reason this project is even possible. The fans are what put Philly sports on the map way back when and they're the reason games are huge events and players want to play here. Taking "Philly" out of the name and replacing it with a brand is a slap in the face to all of us who have stood by those teams through thick and thin.

Can't wait to see this project be built.

While I agree with you, the days of noncommercial naming of public venues are over. Given the Phillies play at Citizens Bank Park, the Eagles play at Lincoln Financial Field and 76ers and Flyers play at the Wells Fargo Center, at least the new entertainment extravanganza isn't called "Rita's Water Ice Live!"

It's different. This isn't a stadium. Honestly, who names an entertainment district after a company?

Every other one of Cordish's projects are named after the area, as it should be.

Most cities are not home to largest entertainment company in the U.S.. I see this becoming the sports broadcasting mecca.

Touching. Just touching. A bit melodramatic though don't you think?

Besides the thing is... they aren't naming the sports complex. They're naming a manufactured entertainment district on land that is owned... by comcast, with construction being paid for... by comcast, which will feature content sponsered and delivered... by comcast and its subsidiaries.

They could call it whatever the hell they want.

I think it's ridiculous to get bent out of shape over the corporate sponsor of what is honestly for all intents and purposes a mall that includes booze and a bunch of television screens, (not saying this is a bad thing, and i'm excited about it's potential, but they're building a commercial/entertainment/retail center out of a parking lot, let's not make this out to be something too hallowed to have a corporate sponsor). Especially considering when most people go to "Xfinity Live" they'll get there by getting off at the "At&t station", on their way to going into the "Well Fargo Center", or "Lincoln Financial Field", or "Citizen's Bank Park."

Corporate sponsors are everywhere, especially when it comes to sports. Get used to it. At least the corporate sponsor is a local Philadelphian sponsor. The amount of hate for comcast in the region is just unfathomable to me.

Most Philadelphians I know hate comcast and prefer verizon, even though their service is worse, the prices are terrible, they lock you into contracts, etc. Comcast has terrible customer service. Oh well I'll deal with it, it's not exactly the worst thing in the world. Especially considering I'd much rather support a company that provides jobs and contributes money and A LOT of philanthropy to the Philadelphia region... instead of a NYC based company.

Sure, they're a huge bloodsucking corporation, but hey at least they're OUR huge bloodsucking corporation. It's not exactly like Verizon is some mom and pop shop.

Anyway back on topic. I honestly could care less about the name, and since comcast and snider are the guys getting this done, I have zero problem with them slapping their names up all over the place. Let's keep this in perspective, as far as corporate sponsors go, it could be A LOT WORSE. A scene from your nightmares: Coming soon: The Xfinity Triple Play Freedom Center at Independence Hall.

No, not even remotely melodramatic.

And once again, it is not even remotely the same thing. Stadiums give out naming rights to make money. Comcast isn't doing that, now are they? Nope. It's a non-analogy. You also once again fail to respond to the fact that every other entertainment district has no corporate name.

I really don't appreciate your tone. Also, please point out to me where I showed hate for Comcast. Since you can't ever point that out because I didn't ever do it, stop putting words in my mouth. I hate Verizon, Breyers, and every other company that screwed over the area and in fact boycott them all. Stop trying to lump people in with others.

Once again, I am going to point out a few things: This is not their sports complex. It was built on the site of JFK and Ed Snider was not the first person to build something there. The Eagles were there before he ever was. I will always have a place in my heart and have tons of respect for Ed Snider for bringing hockey to Philadelphia and everything else he's done but there are four teams at that Sports Complex and none of them would have shiny new stadiums if they didn't have the best fans in the country. The Flyers would be nothing without their fans. They would've folded within 5 years.

More importantly, it is supposed to represent Philadelphia and more importantly Philadelphia sports to everybody who comes there. You can make little comments all you like but the fact is that the sports complex is a major part of the Philadelphia area. It is also the only place that represents Philadelphia sports and its impressive history since all four major sports teams play there. It's more than just the parking lot where the Spectrum used to be. That complex means and represents something.

. . . to you.

This has been very interesting thread. If this naming abomination so incenses you, can I suggest you start another thread to discuss it rather than further hijacking this one. Thanks.
