Can any of you guys explain to me; the newbie, who Inga Saffron is?
I saw her name being mentioned everywhere in various Philadelphia forum (and of course in alot of articles).
I concluded that people do not really like / have good opinion about her; that her opinions are not substantial due to her lack of knowledge and academic degree related to the topic she discussed?

She's the "architecture" critic for the Inquirer. She recently won a questionable, IMO, Pulitzer prize, probably more for her style of writing. And,yes, she has no academic credentials wrt what she tries to write about.

A few years back she wrote a scathing review of Carl Dranoff's Symphony House, at Broad and Spruce Sts., calling it a "nightmare on Broad St". Nevermind that Dranoff is one of the most successful developers in the city's history and is a pioneer in what we now call gentrification.

Dranoff just announced more about his new hotel/residence project at Broad and Locust. There's a link about it upthread.

And, oh, despite it's odd pink color, Symphony House had no trouble selling units. Clearly buyers ignored Saffron completely.

Ah OK.
Yeah alot of people not only in city-data, but also in other forums such as Philadelphia Speaks do not have very good opinions about her.

I believe she either graduated from, or taught at or both for the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

I read her articles every week. Though she can be dramatic in her writing, a lot of the points she makes are very valid, and I have not met one person who thinks Symphony House is an attractive building.

Not a newbie, shes been an architecture and design critic in Philly longer than we have both been alive probably. I do not always agree with her views, but read her bio on Harvards website, she is not some random fool who has a blog about architecture, actually quite the contrary.

Ops sorry! he he.
The newbie I was referring to is me, not Inga.
Although technically I am not a newbie, but I am relatively new compared to alot of other posters who had lived in Philadelphia all their lives.

I dont agree her 100% of the time, but Inga Saffron is great, and she was ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about the symphony house. Philly & the Inky are very lucky to have her.

Lots of very successful developers build junk, and lots of junk sells (these two things are perhaps related?) They really don't need to have their butts kissed for cashing in.

Not longer than I've been alive....

The only thing I agree with her about is her past and present attitude about surface parking lots.
