Hi. I've made a couple of these threads in other state forums but, I'm doing this in order to find out more information for a future job position. I just got a call back from a manager out there so, I just want to get some more information regarding places to rent around this area just in case.

I'll be working at the airport so, anything close to the airport would be preferable. It will just be me and I'm not into anything fancy. I'm hoping to find anything below $800 (studio / 1br) if that's even possible out there. I do have a car but, I can leave that here if I can just get around using a public system. We don't have anything like that down here (other than buses) so, I'm not sure how that works or if a car would be better. Thanks.

There are three train stations downtown (they call it Center City) that run a train to the airport once an hour but it is only practical if you are actually working in the airport and not just somewhere near it. Your budget might just cover a small studio in an older high rise or walk up downtown and then you wouldn't need a car. Of course the train 10 trips a week can be expensive. You would probably buy a weekly or monthly pass www.septa.org for information. Of course you will be dependent on public transportation which is pretty reliable but of course stuff happens. I don't know where you are coming from but Philly's downtown is very busy, vibrant, crowded with many stores, resturants, nightlife etc. Sort of a smaller version of Manhattan.
On the other hand rent will be lower in a nearby suburb south of the airport like maybe Prospect Park 19076, Glenolden 19036, Ridley 19043 or Ridley Park 19076 and many others nearby. These are older towns, not fancy but safe working class neighborhoods that are only a few minutes to the airport with many apartments. In that case if you work inside the airport itself you will park in the employee lot (nominal cost) and shuttle into the airport. If your employer is just close to but outside the airport they will probably have a parking lot.

The Airport Line (R1) wouldn't be much good if it ran once/hour. It actually runs every 30 minutes from/to 4 locations within the Airport from/to Temple U, Market East, Suburban Station, 30th St Station, University City and Eastwick. The monthly Pass rate for unlimited travel between the airport and any station on the R1 is currently $83.

Yea I'd be working at the airport (well, outside). I'm not too concerned as far as night life, shopping, eating out, etc. since I'll more than likely just be going to and from work until I get myself situated. I'd be fine living in the suburbs if it meant a significant drop in rent. I guess I'd have to resort to bringing my car but, that shouldn't be a problem. I'll have to check out the locations you posted. I'm about to call her back to get more details regarding the hiring process for people out of state so, I'll have to get back with you guys. Thanks so far!

Both Prospect Park and Ridley Park have some nice, well kept apartments with very affordable rents. Both areas are friendly, and I would imagine you would probably make friends easily. It would br less than 15 minutes to get to the airport. Good Luck!

Good to know! Have any of you heard of crash pads? A friend of mine suggested that I look it up but, my google skills must not be too good. I assume these are rooms for rent? I heard they could range anywhere from $100 - $300 a month. Any of you know of such a thing in the area?

Sorry I don't mean to double post but, I don't see an edit button.

So I just talked to the recruiter today and she explained to me about the hiring process and she also mentioned something about a 4% tax. I was on a pre-paid phone so I didn't want to ask for further details but, is there a thread around that explains this?

If you live in Philly, whether you work in or of the city you'll pay a wage tax of just under 4%. If you live outside the city but work there, you'll pay a wage tax of just under 3.5%. Depending on where you'll be working in the airport area, your employer may or may not have a Philadelphia address...although from the phone call you mentioned, it sounds like you'll indeed be working in Philly.

Here's a summary of the Philly wage tax:

I personally would not recommend any housing option in the Philadelphia area that maxed out at $300/month. For perhaps $400 (+ utils), you may be able to find a decent apt/house share. CityPaper.net and PhiladelphiaWeekly.com can be good sources for this as well as the site by that guy named Craig.

Thanks! Sometime within the next couple of weeks, they should be calling me to set up a face to face interview where I'll have to fly out there. I might end up driving so I can look around and check some of these places out.
