we live in the Art Museum area now and absolutely LOVE it!

Who says you can't live in the city with 2 little kids?
We have everything within 1 mile range. Day care, Whole Foods, playground, museums, Fairmount Park, Downtown (Rittenhouse Square). For a good public school we'll most likely move to Queen Village (Meredith will get you throughout elementary and middle school then or before you go to magnet Masterman)

Demographically Upper Darby is the most similar to Evanston. Upper Darby has a slightly higher population and slightly higher population density, Its walkable and urban throughout, but lacks a lakefront, and has a ghetto reputation(which isn't hard for a place to get in the Philly area), but IMO is not as bad as some people make it out to be.

Your post suggests "Main Line"; the easiest commute (by car or train - which are you thinking?) by train would be to live near Paoli or Bryn Mawr for from these train stations you can catch an Amtrak train into NYC. Having said that, any of the Main Line regional rail stations (it's the R5 line, you can look up the stations at www.septa.org; click regional rail, then click schedules, then click Paoli/Thorndale) will get you into Center City Philly where you could then switch to an Amtrak train. From Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, or Villanova, you'd also have easy access to 476N and the PA Turnpike if you wanted to drive. I sell residential real estate on the Main Line so let me know if I can help you find something to rent or buy. RDiamond@kw.com. Best of luck and feel free to ask additional questions!

Living in the city with kids is the easy part... It's commuting from the city to Collegeville that would be rough!
