I wouldn't really get too caught up with how people are spending their money or their parents money. People have been doing stupid things with money for ages. The important thing is what you do with your money.

I personally never buy new cars and I always pay cash. I also feel that all your cars, boats and other toys that go down in value should not be more than 25% of your annual take home pay. There are tons of things in life more important than a car.

I had a BMW in my youth - paid half cash, financed half. I really enjoyed it. I may buy one again someday. However, it's going to be hard to take that plunge even though I can afford it. I would be thinking of the opportunity cost of lost $ I could be investing. Once you are a saver it's difficult to let go!

In this case it seems that Mommy and Daddy ought to be rewarding themselves rather than letting junior show what a spoiled brat he is!

You would be able to answer the OPs questions better if you had read the thread before posting.

I did, but what other people do with their money is their business, and it took her awhile to get around to what is really bugging her.

I mean, it doesn't have to be a Mercedes, it could be a Caddy, Porche, or Hummer.

The real question is if you could afford a luxury vehicle, would you buy one?

Yes, with cash, if I thought it would serve my needs. That said, my spouse and I have owned only two cars in our twenty-five years of marriage. We have made it a habit to live and work near light rail stations.

I love the reverse snobbery in here. Hey, I'm not a Mercedes kind of guy. But I wouldn't mind a Porsche or an Audi.
