Looking for my husband's half brother and I finally found some information! According to state records, Joel Laws Lewis was born in 1946 in Craven County, North Carolina. However, his parents were divorced and we have heard that his father (my husbands father, now passed away) was not allowed to have contact. His mother was Betty or Elizabeth and was a school teacher, but may have moved out of North Carolina in the 1950's and remarried and changed Joel's last name, so it probably isn't Lewis anymore.
Does anyone know any Laws that currently reside in Craven County and might know of Joel? My mother in law remembers someone by the name of John Laws (this was in the 1950's) that was a state trooper in New Bern. This could be a relative.... Please post if you have any information!

I did uncover some additional information. My brother in law remembers a picture of Joel at his grandmothers and he was definitely in the Navy. My BIL also 'almost' crossed paths with Joel when my BIL was in the Air Force and due to the age difference it seems Joel would probably have been career Navy so I have to pull my military resources to see what else I can find out.
Oh, and it appears he DID keep the full name - Joel Laws Lewis.
I was able to get his birth certificate to confirm that he is my DH's brother.
Joel Laws Lewis b. 12/25/1946 in New Bern, North Carolina. There was a question about his last name, but we are pretty sure he is still a Lewis. There were changes on his birth certificate to his middle name and his mother's maiden name (but they appeared to be errors made originially) done in 1956. So my guess is that in 1956 his mother needed a copy and saw the errors so it was corrected.
Father - Earl Wayne Lewis, Jr
Mother - Elizabeth Betti (Betty) Laws
All of my google searches have not turned up anything - except now I do have some of his Aunt/Uncle information.
