Have you seen Silent Hill or played the videgame? That's what will happen.

I think Pyramid Head retired and moved to Ashland though.

Good post, OP! I've wanted to visit Centralia for years, but I too question the safety of exploring the area. I don't know how the locals feel about nosey, sightseeing visitors either.

There aren't that many locals left in Centralia. However, there are sightseers there all the time and the people who are left are used to them. Just don't go into their yards or bother them and you'll be fine.

Google Centralia. You'll find a ton of stuff on the town, including news articles about their recent court battles with the state. The stuff that is most credible is the less reactionary stuff. Anything that tells you you'll die of smoke inhalation, your shoes will melt from the heat of the pavement, etc. is nonsense. In order to make your visit at all interesting for you though, you are going to have to do some research on the town. Look for pictures on what the town looks like before the buyouts, information on life in Centralia before the fire, etc. That way you have something with which to compare the town. You'll be blown away by how a town could disappear in just over 20 years.

Unfortunately, if you don't do the research it will just look like a patch of coal strip mining with some smoke coming out.

Yeah Centralia has been a hot spot destination for my family for years - but I'm frightened that it might be dangerous...yet it attracts me.

When I lived in Lavelle it was a very short drive north to Centralia.
My friends and I were avid bottle diggers at the time.

We went several times to the cemetery and took the path around it the south side then down the hill to dig in the old dump area.

When we were digging in that dump area we could feel the heat begin to rise off some of the 3 to 4 foot holes that we dug.
