I'm curious to know how long the nursing mothers out there breastfed their last child? If you're still at it, how long as it been? Do you work full-time?
I nursed my first child for all of a day. I tried harder the second time around and so far it's been 4 1/2 months. I work full-time.

I had many difficulties with my first child because of him being "tongue-tied". This was very frustrating, because as a new, 23 yr old mom, I even asked the doc and they made it out like you don't do anything about that. It wasn't till months later of he and I passing thrush back and forth that I finally gave up (he was 4 months old, but I had also supplemented). I was a full-time stay at home mom.
DS #2 was easy breezy to breastfeed. I breastfeed exlusively until 8and half months old. I would have done it till the one year mark (my goal) but crisis in my life forced me to leave my children (with their grandparents) for several weeks in order to get my life straightened out, and needless to say I could not pump enough in this time to keep it up.
I nursed for two full years with both children. Suddenly it seemed they were able to have a full blown intelligent conversation with me, that's when I decided it was time to stop. I was able to stay at home with them.
8 months with #1. 8 months with #2. I found it a little more challenging with #2 just b/c of the age of #1 when #2 came along.
I have a couple of friends who just had #3 all during the same month. One just found b/f too much after a few weeks and the other two went a little over 6 months.
I think a lot of mom's personality plays into breastfeeding. I know it did with me.
And a helpful boss who gives workers space & time to pump cannot be overlooked
I did not work with any of them so I was able to bf as long as it worked out. #1 was just over 2 yrs and I cut that off b/c he showed no sign of giving up his bedtime feeding and I was hating it. #2 6mos, I was 3 mos pg with #3 when we stopped. #3 9 mos- he would not stay latched on b/c he was very hyper and still is, #4 about 14-15 mos. He stopped on his own around the time I was ready to end it, worked out very well.
I never could pump much, even with all of the tricks, scheduled, same time every day pumping. I think the day I got 3 oz in one 20-min session I was overjoyed. In addition I had too much lipase with #1 for whatever reason and the pumped milk was absolutely sour tasting. You can scald it to stop the lipase breaking down the milk but I did not need to pump so I didn't. If I had gone back to work I am not sure if I could have pumped; I am thankful I did not.
much to my dismay, i didnt have enough milk!! both my grandmothers had enough to nurse for a couple of years! i only got maybe 2 oz at a time and it only lasted 6 weeks before it became painful----
i love when couples decide that they will nurse to save money etc---you just dont know what will happen!!

When I first started I would pump and found that I only made 2-3 oz at a time. That is all the baby needs. It's often untrue that someone does not "make enough milk." It is not measured like formula.
If someone is looking to work and can't pump, just remember that you will make what the baby drinks and based on when you nurse. So if you can't nurse between say 9-5 after a week or two your body will not make it during those times and the swelling will cease to exist.
