Wow... all of our other children are very, very clean and well-groomed at all times. Then, there's our youngest...
My 6 year old is very clean, always washes his hands, can't stand to have on a dirty shirt, etc. He does not, however, EVER willingly take a bath. He'll wash till the cows come home at Grandma's house, and he'll let me do the sponge bath thing, wiping him off, always clean in other ways, very vain about his appearance, but lfat out refuses to bathe. It's such a struggle... None of the other 4 kids were ever like this.
Am I alone here? Anyone have any suggestions? I hate the way a sweaty little guy can smell...

It's a control issue, and you're letting him win. He needs to learn to toe the line in a big hurry or he'll start calling the tune on other things.
Deals? Rewards?
Come on. Put the kid in a shower and bathe him. No fuss. It's important that kids realize that there are some things they just have to do.

Mean Mother
I agree.. it is much easier to give him 15 minutes to do it on his own
or get the mean mom bath which would probably mean soap in your
eyes ,the really stiff brush you hate on your back, the water colder than you like it. Your choice though!!! Then there is always having to go to bed early because no one wants to smell you. , and "Oh I wish you could have dessert but we don't want to be near you" Or bath before dinner
and NO BATH= NO DINNER..hunger will take over.
Personally I am all for "go take a bath" or go to your room and prepare for your spanking!!
Since he's young enough, the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle story about the kid that never bathed might work on him! If I remember correctly it involved waiting a week or so for a good amount of dirt to develop, then dropping some veggie seeds in their ear while sleeping . Mrs. Piggle Wiggle always scared me when I was little, I remember being very careful to take all my baths after reading that particular story.
it could be age/stage
it could be a boy thing
it could be a fifth child thing (my 5th one is the same way)
none of that really matters- i'm with the mean moms. do it, its not an option.
however, i did buy him an 'axe' body care set for christmas- the special spongey, pouffy thing to wash with, shampoo, body wash deo and all that stuff. he seems to fight me a little less. anything to be more like the older brothers.

Why are you letting your child refuse to bathe? You're the parent, act like it and take control. The child does not get to refuse when a parent tells them what to do.
Not even a shower... It's ridiculous! I understand that some kids just don't like to bathe, but this is silly. I have to do pretty much everything via soapy washcloth.

Sorry but it isn't the child who is being ridiculous. It isn't the child being silly either. Just saying it the way it is.
The child in question was 6 in 2008 when the OP posed the question. Apparently the issue resolved itself once school started. I think it's safe to assume, at 12, he's showering regularly.
