Wow, reading comprehension.

Overall hitting kids and animals is barbaric. It's just wrong. Sad that it still happens.

Which country are you from, again?

This question was not directed at me, but I used to live in Costa Rica and I also used to live in the U.S. city with the highest Kenyan population in the U.S. I can DEFINITELY confirm that both cultures believe strongly in practicing physical discipline with their children.

Because what you describe as being "barbaric" isn't necessarily so

Here is what barbaric means:

1.
savagely cruel; exceedingly brutal.

2.
primitive; unsophisticated.

You don't think hitting children and animals is barbaric?

There is no one single, simple answer to this, but please remember, there are... thousands of different cultures out there, and billions of people who would disagree with you (and probably call 'barbaric' some things you take for granted). It seems mostly westerners who like to stand on their soap box and insist the rest of the world adopt their values/ways.

Pfft no not so much. I know there are plenty of things we do in the US that are stupid and unhealthy that I wish weren't a thing.

It should be universal that people don't hit their kids. Are arguing with that? Speak up. Do you think it's ok for parents to hit kids?

Why should it be universal? See, I might agree with you, but not with this line of thinking. It should be up to people in those cultures to decide (and without outside pressure).

In some cases. Depends on what type of "hit". Ideally in rare cases and not as a form of getting anger out/losing control

So then why do we have to respect everyone's religion or even culture? If someone in a certain culture decides it's ok to hit their kids are we all expected to respect that?

If someone spanks their kid I don't really care. It's not my concern. A spank on the bum isn't necessarily cruel and often doesn't hurt. Do i think it helps? most likely no. If someone is hurting their kids then that is a different story.

I guess my question would be what is your definition of "hurt"? Where do we draw the line? Marks? Permanent damage? Then you have emotional abuse, which gets overlooked...

Are you asking why we do, or why we should? Yes, if the culture as a whole decides it's what they find acceptable, bud out. If they reach out for support and want others to shed light on an issue, different story.
