This is going to be the first time my son is going to be home alone during summer. He has friends at school, but don't hang out with them outside of school, so spending time with friends is not an option. Not sure what he would do all day long home alone since both of us are working. Can parents with high schooler's give me some suggestions?
He will probably spend his time between the kitchen, video games and sleeping. If that's unacceptable makes a sports camp or something that he would enjoy.
How about a summer job? Camp councilor, volunteer work to boost that college resume. 9th and 10th grade I think all I did was my chores then hung out with friends. 11th and 12th I worked at the local amusement park.

Not quite as easy as it used to be. Most summer jobs are taken by college kids these days (with unemployment being so high), and the volunteer jobs are also harder to come by. I just had the same problem, and other then putting mine into a couple of camps, it was hang out at home, or over at friends with stay at home moms.
I wasn't sure where to find volunteering for this age group kids. I've applied at the library, haven't heard back from them. I know YMCA sports camp don't accept kids over 15 years, anything else out there for older kids.
Sitting around all summer wouldn't fly by me. Stick flyers in mailboxes offering to pet sit, pressure wash sidewalks, etc. At the very least, I'd want dinner ready when I got home. Maybe you'll discover a budding chef.
I had my son go through Sambica's ELITE high school program for grades 9-12. It kept him occupied all summer...and he loved it! He worked at the camp rotating shifts in the kitchen, maintenance, general store then lake time. From what I understand they may have tightened the requirements but it worked perfect for us.

Is he over 15 and going into 9th grade?
