When I was a kid I loved the lottery scratch off cards...(even though one year I won $100 and my mom claimed that that money was going back to santa, she was joking i got it haha) Gift Cards are a big hit too, my brothers hated when my parents got them something that was ugly and wish they had a gift card to pick out what they wanted. Silly bandz are also awesome.
I forgot my parents also once put coal in my stocking....I still to this day get them back and sneak downstairs and put coal intheirs...jerks ;] (they did it totally kidding around they hid my real stuff haha)
We put a round bottle of Coke in the toe every year. And I always have 'too much' for the stocking. For my 10 yo son, some of the additions are a SIM card for the DS he's getting, a thumbnail drive, trading cards, a strange little bird thing I found, one pair of expensive fleece socks, small multi-tool thing, keychain, a movie - there are others too, but I forget. And it's all hidden away, so I can't go peek. I pick up stocking stuff throughout the year - keeping my eye open for those little things that they want, but seem like a waste to me.
Oh - my daughter this year asked for the Silly Bandz RINGS - the wrist Bandz are SO last year!
A Christmas ornament (shaped like something he's interested in) with 12/25/10 written in small print on the back with a Sharpie. We give our girls one special ornament each year so they'll have a collection for their own trees when they leave home.
If you live in a cold climate hand warmers (those little silver pouches that get warm when you shake them) are great for when he's playing outside or waiting for the school bus.
Around here the independent toy stores sell little wind up toys for $3 to $5. There are monkeys that play cymbals, seals that spin balls, etc. Kids like to collect them and display them on their dressers.
A book.
A kazoo or harmonica. I've noticed that boys love to make noise.
A magnifying glass or compass for outdoor explorations.
Good luck!
