Here are a few tips on how to protect your knees when headed downhill. Hiking uphill is great for your health. But.... going down the other side can cause serious knee pain and even stress your joints.
Zig-zag. Instead of walking straight down the incline, walk in a zig zag pattern. This significantly decreases the pressure on your knee joints.
Try walking backwards. Walking backwards gives tired muscles a break since moving this way uses the opposite muscle group of walking forward. One important rule: When you need to look back to see where you are going, alternate which shoulder you look over. You can tweak your neck just looking to one side.
Slap your VMO. The vastis medialis oblique is the inner part of your quads. It's the muscle that keeps the knee cap tracking correctly, and you will have less stress on your knees if you give it a few little smacks right before you head downhill.
Tip of The Day features ideas I hear about--not always ones I've tried. They sound good to me in theory and who knows--some of them (hopefully most of them) may be brilliant. Anyway, the point of this thread is to start some fun conversations. By all means jump in and add jokes, comments, and even your own tips, if you'd like.
I'm not so sure about the walking backwards dow the mountain idea, though. If I saw a group of hikers doing this I might wonder what they were drinking from their canteen...
