Happy Cinco de Mayo! Today's tip for controlling flies and wasps comes from YoungLisa7:
"Fill a ziplock bag with water and 5 or 6 pennies and hang it in the problem area. In my case it was a particular window in my home. It had a slight passage way for insects. Every since I have done that, it has kept flies and wasps away. Some say that wasps and flies mistake the bag for some other insect nest and are threatened.
I swear by the plastic bag of water trick. I have them on our porch and basement. We saw these in Northeast Mo. at an Amish grocery store & have used them since. They say it works because a fly sees a reflection & won't come around."
More on the science behind this in the next post (or maybe a little later tody, 'cause I've got a busy morning...)
Tip of The Day features ideas I hear about--not always ones I've tried. They sound good to me in theory and who knows--some of them (hopefully most of them) may be brilliant. Anyway, the point of this thread is to start some fun conversations. By all means jump in and add jokes, comments, and even your own tips, if you'd like.
Lisa, I have seen this tip before. Does it really work? I would love to have an effective remedy to repel flies. I live in a rural area with lots of feedlots around. WE GOT FLIES!! I have a much bigger problem with flies than I do mosquitoes.
Lisa also sent me a note regarding the science behind this:
"My research found that the millions of molecules of water presents its own prism effect and given that flies have a lot of eyes, to them it's like a zillion disco balls reflecting light, colors and movement in a dizzying manner. When you figure that flies are prey for many other bugs, animals, birds, etc., they simply won't take the risk of being around that much perceived action."
I wonder if you could hang a bag on your garden hat to keep the mosquitoes away from you? You would look a little silly....but you wouldn't itch later.

Plus, you'd have a handy drink of water in case you get thirsty doing all that weeding. And who cares how silly you look? Pulling weeds is guaranteed to make you look silly, anyway, so you might as well go for the gusto.
Give it a try, let us know how it works.
