Amazing the odd and different uses there are for common products. I've heard that toothpaste makes a good silver polish, too. Somewhere in the House Forum is a long-running thread on "Household Secrets". Lots of good hints have been posted there.

So if we're out of white vinegar, I guess red wine vinegar wouldn't be a good substitute?
Seriously, we always have a jug of white vinegar in the house. It's the only thing DW uses to get spills/stains from the carpets. Works like a charm and keeps them looking brand new!

No. You use only a cup in an entire wash load. No vinegar smell remains.
