Does the term Yankee offend me? Heavens, no: My family has been in Massachusetts (Boston and environs) for 11 generations and I'm very proud of it! I consider being called a Yankee a compliment.
the word yankee wouldnt offend me in the least,,,,or being called a cracker,,,
(after a long winter,,not being in the sun,,i do resemble a saltine..)
i've learned thru the years,,,anyone can throw verbal rocks at you,,but once you catch them, you are playing thier game,,,so, just choose to write them off,,ignore,,,etc, easier said than done sometimes,,,its along the lines,,"why give someone else the power to define you" especially,,a dickweed"
the term "yankee" actually,,has some positive connotations to it,,,in many early books,,,when life in maine was written about,,it was very harsh,,,but seemed to use that term,,yankee,,in the light of ,,rugged individualism, and strong will to survive.
Well it's been 7 for you already. Looks like your starting a streak of your own.
Well I guess you "hate" me then.
There are more Yankees fans out there then any other team. Every sport has that team and the Yankees are that for baseball. I have met so many Yankee fans that aren't even from the East Coast or have even been to the Bronx. I myself am from Detroit and could care less what the Tigers are up to. Comerica is a heck of a nice park though.
Here in europe(concretely in spain and western europe), we used that term in a despective way.I dont know the serbians or the russians if they use it...
I dont like to use terms like "yankee" and "latino" because i dont like to offend anybody.
Here it exist this connotation.
In the other hand, we can't find a right term for your nacionality. Americans? We can use it, but... what happens with Canada and the other americans? In our opinion, America isn't a country, but the Continent. So, which is the best term?
America IS a country, it's the short form of our official name. North America is the continent. No citizens of any country on the North American continent call themselves Americans except those from the United States -- OF AMERICA. What else can we call ourselves? United Statesians? Not only does it sound dumb, but consider that Mexico's official name is the United States of Mexico.
I've never heard of any citizens from Canada or Mexico who want to be called "Americans." I'm fairly confident that Canadians and Mexicans are happy to be called Canadians and Mexicans and don't want to be confused with citizens of the United States of America.
If one wants to refer to all of the peoples on the continent, they could say North Americans, and that would include Canada and Mexico. But the word "American" by itself is inextricably associated with the United States of America.
We got first dibs, so we're keeping it!!!
Back to the original question, I've never been called a Yankee so I don't know if if would bother me or not. I guess it would depend on who said it and how it was intended. But I probably wouldn't get my hackles up over it.
