Although I know chilled melon is refreshing,we all in my family prefer room temperature melon. You see the aroma comes more out, plus they are more juicy than too ..( also my teeth are getting more sensitive when biting in cold things )

Thank you Pammy great tip as usual

Citrus at room temperature? I only take them out the day I'll eat them because cold anything hurts my teeth. How long can you keep oranges out before they go bad?

Yes! I think I once did a whole Tip just on storing tomatoes. They should only be refrigerated if they are getting over-ripe and soft. Refrigerating them will stop the ripening process.

I've never refrigerated citrus. I've had oranges last well over a week at room temperature.

As others, I was surprised that peaches was not on the "refrigerate" list. But citrus - yes, keep those at room temp.

True! Melons, like cheese, are much more aromatic and flavorful when served at room temperature.

Of course, personal preference trumps.

A while back, I did a Tip on mashing and freezing avocados. It works well.

I don't know of any way to successfully freeze other fruits and veggies and have them maintain their good texture and flavor, with just a few exceptions. Blueberries and other berries freeze and thaw very well. I also sometimes freeze chopped bell peppers and onions for use in soups, sauces and egg dishes. They're a little mushy when thawed out but fine to cook with.

I sure wish there was a way to freeze stuff like lettuce and tomatoes and have them look and taste like fresh when they're thawed. I don't see that ever happening, though.

Room temperature makes the big difference in vegie products ripening/lasting. The cooler the temps the longer they keep.

I freeze cherries. Since their season is so short and they're very expensive, I usually load up while they're in season. Begrudgingly, I pit every single one of them put them on a cookie sheet and place in the freezer until solid. Transfer to a large freezer bag and I've got cherries through the year. I do the same for blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. Putting them on a cookie sheet beforehand and freeze makes removal from bag easy. Just grab a handful and you're good to go.

Now that's a GREAT idea. I never thought of using a cookie sheet first. And I always enjoy berries of any name!

This reminds me years ago my folks used some kind of "dryer" machine and placed fresh fruits cut into pieces in the thing.... next thing you knew - they had dried fruits that they could use all the rest of the season and on. Bananas are one of the items that won't freeze but they're fine if dried.

I can't take all the credit for the cookie sheet idea. I saw Ina Garten mention it on one of her shows.

A food dehydrator is on my wish list. I did put some grapes on a framed window screen under the sun once. I was trying to make raisins. The birds ate them.
