I agree with tijlover about the airports. They're bad in that way. I don't think the airlines offer any great deals on their food and, you're definitely a captive audience during your flight.
I wouldn't mind being gouged if the merchandise was first-rate, but it usually isn't. Theatres don't make a profit on the actual exhibiting of the films, so they have to rely on the concession stand to break even. That's why the prices are so high.
I usually don't eat or drink at the movies, but sometimes I'll get a coffee or a small popcorn with no butter when I visit an independent, single-screen theatre because they need all the help they can get to stay in business. (I've heard that movie theatre popcorn is pretty much unheard of in Britain, is that true, Jez?)
I also agree with elnina that constant snacking is a major cause of obesity.
No Shep- popcorn is generally to be had at cinemas, and can be bought in shops.
I never buy food or drink at a theater. I see other people doing so and am in awe of the wealth displayed in this time of economic distress.
Love the pictures of the Pelicans, Jezer. We see them here as well. Before we had our large shade trees we would see them migrating. There would be a few hundred of them circling and rising in thermals, then they would get to a height and fly away.
Good peeve, Jezer. Pay more for snacks than the price of admission. Must say though the last time I went to a movie in the states it was great because they served beer! The perfect way to watch The Rum Diary with J. Depp
take me out to the ball game, take me out to the game
buys some peanuts and cracker jack
I dont' care if I ever get back..........la la la la la
Can't bring anything thing here they search you and their snacks/foods are outrageously price.
Movies.,.....I carry a large bag filled with snacks. Brought my grand and stopped at the dollar store for candy.
Also had juice boxes in my bag. They were fine. No way am I paying what they want.
But the ball park is different.
I always wonder why people just can't be without food/drink for few hours. That constant chewing and sipping is the main cause of obesity. Big cup of soda and bucket (!!!) of popcorn probably covers three days' worth of saturated fat and sugar.
No one "makes them" to buy that overprices stuff. People choose to buy it, probably afraid that they will die from hunger and dehydration during the two hours at the movie...
I remember being on a diet a few years ago....well I"m always on a diet but this particular time was about 2 or 3 years ago. I cut up a head of cabbage for a snack enroute to Washington with our community. We took a bus.
I remember the reaction of my neighbors watching me munch of raw cabbage while they had their donuts.
and yes they talk about me.
I have a few peeves that I encountered in the US last week , but here's one from yesterday.
I rarely go to the cinema these days but felt compelled to go and watch 'Rush' yesterday afternoon It was extremely good.
Knowing that the snacks they sell in the cinema was both second rate and also expensive I bought a bar of chocolate from a nearby shop- actually it was a chocolate specialists and it was super yummy!
I seem to recall that some cinemas stop you taking in snacks not bought at their place- fill me in on that if you can.
The POTD is;
Places trying to get you to buy their over priced snacks.
That's a good peeve, Jezer. Theatres around here have a rule against brining in your own snacks or beverages, but they can't really enforce it. People just hide what they bring in. I'd rather go hungry and/or thirsty than to pay concession-stand prices for refreshments.

For trips to the ballpark, I have a secret weapon. I have an insulated thermos and mug that looks just like a Nikkor camera zoom lens. It looks sort of like the one pictured below, only even more realistic. I fill it with the beverage of my choice, screw on the cap, and carry it in with my camera and other lenses.
I also have a pair of "Barnoculars," which looks very much like binoculars but is actually two separate flasks. Perfect for football and baseball games.
Funny thing is, I almost always just have water in them. I refuse to pay $3.50 or more for a bottle of water.

I went to a movie in Hamtramck, Michigan a few decades back and folks were in there with picnic baskets full of food (i.e. fried chicken) and cans of drinks. I loved it. Oh, they all stood up and applauded at the end of the movie and I joined right in. It was great fun.
You kinda' need to know the culture of Hamtramck to really appreciate the place.
Now, Jezer, you need some tips on how to smuggle goodies into the movie theater. Mrs. J. needs a BIG purse that you can cram food and bottled drinks into. I do it all the time. I even took a roast beef sandwich in one time. It's not at all classy but it sure saves money and it's good for the soul to know you can be a successful sneak. LOL
