I've been a long time City Data lurker and have found it through searching various topics on google and coming to this website and getting responses to things I am curious about in life. Having moved to a few different states and reading the Colorado Forum after moving here last summer I have found this to be a valuable resource and I love being able to contribute and share. I will admit and kinda embarrassed but I have found this a great site to interact since I have not really met people here in my new city. I get lonely at times especially working 2nd shift kinda kills one's social life since I usually crash by midnight. Overall a cool website. Fun to reply, share, comment and connect with others through various issues, cities and even the world.
Charlie.
I just want to add that I realize an internet forum is no substitute for real life relationships with other people. This website has been great for me to learn about Colorado and all the wonderful things to do and see here.
I think what you are talking about is related to the obsession to have the last word. I have witnessed the situation where two posters go back and forth at each other, endlessly repeating the same things using slightly different language and examples. They don't seem to tire of the game, as if it is a complusion to have the last word. Those who are just observing tire of the game very quickly, however, and just wish one of the two of them would shut up and move on. I have seen this most often in the Personal Finance and Economics Forums, but it is not limited to them.
When I notice that my exchange of opinions with someone is starting to get like that, I usually post something like this: "I notice we are repeating ourselves, so this will be my last post on the subject; if you want to have the last word, just post again and your wish will come true."
You know, some people take pride in sitting behind their computer and just knowing they must be right, they want to look good for their little Internet friends. I've tend to notice that when one user makes a very valid point and someone applauds them of it, they continue to debate seeking more attention and applaud. So people just don't get enough attention in life and that's the results. Your post hit the nail right on the head.
there are certain forums that are conducive for rapid posting, games and contests forum for one, the music forum for another.
seriously, if you spent 30 minutes on the game forum. you could do 25-30 posts
Exactly. Someone earlier cited 70 posts/day as "compulsive posting". If you average 1 to 1-1/2 posts/minute, in 20 minutes you've done 30 posts. So if you post for 20 minutes in the morning before work, 20 minutes in the evening, and 10 minutes maybe during a slow period at work, or on a coffee break, you've got 70 posts/day, and you've only been on the forum a total of 50 minutes. That's far from compulsive, or an all-day thing. You can fire off a few short retorts in just one minute. This assumes you have good typing skills, and aren't hunting-and-pecking.
I only post when I have downtime or when I'm bored at work or home. I only average 3 posts a day though.
I actually found this website through Google and thought it was a cool site. I still have physical friends, though. I think some people do go overboard with this thing.
Discovered C-D about 15 months ago when doing some research on cities and demographic data. Lurked around bit, searched a few topics of interest. Then after I got the feel of the flow, I sort of treat it as a visitor at a Versailles Palace wandering about the 'salons', dropping in to listen to discussions of interest.
If I find one which I feel I can contribute too, I do. About 80% of my posts are serious about 20% attempts via humor to make people think or just the opinion in passing or 'favorites' type. I generally post in brief spurts when I'm in a lingering internet mood, wandering the 'halls' of the forum topics.
Certain forums (politics, religion etc... are generally useless since it often devolves into 'I'm right your wrong' / 'my god's better than your god' / 'he said - she said' drivel and inanity. I peruse it about every other day as way to gauge the internet 'psyche' on various topics, or hopefully plant a seed of thought.
I didn't come to C-D to make friends, as to me, friends are really found in person - so I spend more time trying to maintain a level of contact with 'real' people I know, and not internet avatar personas. Apologies to the few who have outstanding friend requests. Though over time, I have discovered a few who consistently have cogent posts on topics which I appreciate.
Since I have many interests, I find C-D an easy one stop outlet to pursue them in an efficient manner. I really don't give much thought to those who seemingly spend an inordinate time on C-D by volume of posts. Only problem is as a prior poster mentioned, the threads that devolve into bickering points back and forth usually between strident dogmatic types whether religion or political ideology or anything akin to it, vegans / carnivores, brand loyalists, etc....
...snipped..but I have finally achieved
one star...I thought it was a big deal but I guess not.
Same here...lol. I post in spurts. I don't miss it when I am not around the computer but, I do enjoy seeing what is going on after being away for a while.
I had wondered if some people had those "bot" like they have on some games, that can rep a person over and over. I think I post a fair amount but I don't understand how someone can get that much reputation...lol. I don't spend too much time thinking about it though.
I can't believe the post count for some folks 15k in 2 years? Are these people retired, introverted, unemployed, or just bored? Prob. combo of the above
I am not knocking just trying to understand? Some names I see on every thread. I actually wonder if several are posting under 1 screen name?
Me I am unemployed that's my story. I came back to CD after a 4 year? break when I lost my job.
Why does it matter?
I am sure there is something that you do in your life that you do more than anyone else.
Working in inside sales, and talking on the phone all day, it passes the time. Hey, I can multi-task from time to time.
