Hmmm I didn't know about the gas cap thing. I do have a separate sensor for when my tires are low on air so that's really cool. I love old cars but let's face it, the newer ones with all the gadgets and technology are way better, especially for those of us who are auto-challenged and can't even change the oil. Speaking of which, mine needs to be changed now. Thanks Pam!

Wow Pam. I can;t believe they wanted to charge that much. Do you know how many people will take their car in to be checked. You should take an ad out on your local paper to tell people about gas caps, lol. Someone needs to help unsuspecting victims

Oh yeah...we've had to replace our gas cap on the Jeep.

We have that on our motor home. Unfortunately when we manually check the air pressure we find out the gauge was wrong

Gadgets can be cool....but in many cases it's just one more thing that can break

Thanks a lot!
Believe it or not this "check" light is often on on my Beetle, for no obvious reason...

Totally agree Lisa especially when it could be something as simple as the gas cap. Bunch of greedy people out there.

Also when the Check Engine Light comes on you can get a basic free diagnostic check at your local auto supply dealer, such as Checker, NAPA, Auto Zone etal. Their test can tell you if you need a gas cap replacement or if one of the sensors is the problem. Several independent repair shops will also do a basic check for free. Then you can make the decision to pay for a full diagnostic check. A few bucks spent on a diagnostic check can save you thousands of dollars down the line in repairs or replacements. A catalytic converter for example costs on the average $1500 to replace.
We discovered this about the time my daughter was learning to drive. It's nice to know that there are still stores you can trust.

This was very helpful to me Pam.
I did just buy a new battery for my car, but the check engine light only seems to
come on after my daughter puts gas in the car....so I'm going to check that since
I do a 3 click and she probably doesn't.

My current car is the first one I've had with a TPMS - tire pressure monitoring system. A little tire icon lights up if I have a low tire. Thank God, (literally) because in an 11-month stretch from 2011 to 2012 I had FOUR flat tires. ($$$) I have to drive on a potholed, trash-strewn highway in the decrepit city where my office is located, and my tires seem to be magnets for tiny pieces of scrap metal from the trucks that frequent the highway. Three of the four times my TPMS warning came on, I wouldn't have known I had a tire losing pressure until it was too late and I was stranded in a bad neighborhood. The system allowed me to find a safe place to park and phone the mechanic from my office to come and help me.

The first time my car needed an oil change, a bright, orange wrench light appeared on my dash. It startled me at first and I thought there was a problem. I pulled over and flipped through the Owner's Manual, where I learned that the wrench light always comes on when it's time to change the oil. It's a great reminder and gets me to promptly change the oil when it's time.
