I'd go by car and stay in hotels. I'm always the one big on camping but I like camping where you stay in one spot for a while. That putting up and taking down of the tent everyday don't get it! lol
I'd like a trip like my parents took. Drove from here in west Kentucky to St. Louis, then on to Mt. Rushmore, Colorado, Utah, and on to California. Coming back take the southern route, to the Grand Canyon, New Mexico, Texas, and back home. Would we take the kids? With us it would have to be grandkids. And, sure! Why not!
