We used to eat at the boardwalk, but it since has been closed. At least that is what I've been told. Is there a very casual place to eat breakfast right on the beach? New Smyrna would be another option for suggestions.

The Main St. pier restaurant is still there, or at least it was last June... pretty good seafood, reasonable prices. Best part, of course, is sitting out on the pier while you eat. There's a restaurant on the southern pier at Daytona Shores, also, but I haven't eaten there...

The Pier Restaurant is still open, but I'd only go there for lunch, appetizers or a few drinks at sunset. The Hilton Hotel on the Boardwalk has a great restaurant that has a beachview patio that serves breakfast-dinner, but is a bit pricey. The Sunday brunch buffet is amazing if you have a hearty appetite and appreciate good seafood. Alternatively, you can eat on the beach at Ocean Deck restaurant (try google search), which is just a few steps south of the Pier on the beach. It's very crowded on weekends, but you can sit/eat right on the beach or in A/C comfort uptairs. My favorites are Pub 44 on Main Street at the River, and Caribbean Jack's on Ballough Road, which is on the River on the Mainland side, just north of the Main Street Bridge and has the BEST Sunday Brunch in Daytona Beach. It also has an amazing River view.
