I am a mom of a special needs son who is 5. He has severe apraxia and uses a communication device. He's very high functioning and cognitive, on level with kids his age. I am looking for a special needs school that can accommodate his needs- OT, speech, etc. I am moving from NY to Lake Mary/Seminole County. In NY, my son has been approved for a non-public school, but is currently in a private school since there were no schools which had spots, so he needed a placement. How are the services in Florida, do you have to pay out of pocket for additional services? Does anyone know of schools with special needs kids? Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome to Lake Mary! One of my neighbors has a special-needs child that attends Crystal Lakes Elementary and she seems very satisfied with her progress in the ESE (Exceptional Student Education ) program there. Crystal Lakes just achieved an A+ rating from the state for the 5th year in a row. In terms of additional services, I'm not sure if you're alluding to extended day programs or..??

Hey,
I'm not sure how the Florida system works, but with my son, he is not appropriate for public school since he doesn't talk. Is that the case with schools in Florida?

It appears to be covered under public schools here...
