Mommyherzog3- We have done a ton of research, and our research still points us to Ashland. :-) Great schools, lots of outdoor activities, close to the hospital in Medford (for my future job), smaller town, low crime, etc. We know that each town is going to have it's downfalls, and we chose the town that fit our family needs best. We actually really love the Portland area (well, suburbs of, not the city itself) but because of the weather, it fell off our radar relativity fast. Of course we won't know for sure if we will love the town until we live there for a few years, but so far, it seems like a lovely little town.
Where is your family residing in Oregon? I would assume you would want to move near them?

Last Saturday was a beautiful day. I decided to take a little ride.
I was driving on I-5 south.
I took exit 27- south Medford. Turned right. At second traffic light i turned left onto S. Pacific HWY. Follow a way.
Turn right on South Stage Road. This is a beautiful area (rural), with many side roads. At the end of Stage Rd is Griffin Creek Road. To the right it goes toward Jacksonville. To the left it goes toward Talent. Another beautiful area road.

Take a ride Y'all might like what you see. Rural homes in this area.

I agree that this is a beautiful area! ( If indeed it is the same area that I am thinking). My husband and I drove the back roads from Jacksonville to Ashland and there is some beautiful rural properties out there. Beautiful views, lots of grape vineyards... We were searching on-line for homes in that area, but we couldn't remember the exact names of the streets we traveled... we are going to wait until our next trip so we can write down the names of the streets and search for homes again :-)
Thanks for the information Hawk J. :-) Have a wonderful day.

I would recommend Medford-Ashland, its not that much more of a drive to the coast. Ashland has a lot of cool kid friendly shops and is very down town centered, but Ashland is not my recommendation in that area, although very neat and cool it is like previously said "very odd mix of culture". I would live in Medford for the reasons that it is on the bigger side of a city(for oregon), easier access to shops like walmart and target, and not as "weird" as Ashland. Also Bend would be great. I hear it's a great place. But i just love medford.
