I live in La Palma which is in the immediate area and work near Irvine.. although I leave for work around 6am.. and come home around 3-5pm.

There's little traffic at 6am.. the 17 mile commute literally takes me 17 minutes (as both my workplace and home are near the freeway.) But I can't really comment on leaving later in the morning but I'd imagine it'll probably take just as long as going home around 4 or 5.

Going home around 3:30 takes about 25 minutes, 4:30 about 30 minutes, 5:30 about 40 minutes. After about 4:30, it might be faster to avoid I-5 between CA-55 and CA-22. Take CA-55 north and CA-22 west before going back on I-5.

Although they're not part of my commute, I recommend taking the side streets next to I-5 (i think it's Freeway Blvd or something) if you need to cross the LA/Orange county boundary on that freeway. Take a close look at I-5 north of Artesia Blvd.. that stretch of I-5 only has 3 lanes and is completely packed during daylight hours!

Thx, that is really helpful, from la Mirada to south Irvine , is 27 miles for me. I will try to avoid the LA OC junction both way and take local. Have you try coming home, 55N to 91w?

Thx

Tried that a few times but it doesn't seem to help a lot. The portion of 91w between 55 and 57 is brutal as northbound traffic from 55 switch and merge into 57 via 91w.

If you still wish to go that way, take 55 north, then 22 west, then 57 north, and finally 91 west.

Another viable alternative is 22 West then 605 north.. 22 and 605 tend to be the better freeways in terms of traffic.. just beware of the part where 405 joins 22 and the construction makes that already congested area even worse.

If you have a smartphone, you can download the program Waze.. it's extremely helpful especially if any accident practically shuts down your default route home and it might suggest trying an alternative (e.g. if I-5 blocked in Anaheim due to accident, try 57N and 91W today.)

I live in La Mirada & work in Tustin. Crazy drive I leave at 7:00a.m. From Beach 5-south get right on 91 east .
Exit State College go down to 5 get on the on ramp
Which puts you on 22 east then to 55 south to Irvine blvd.
But I exit. At 17th st to Yorba st. Lovely.
