I don't think Phelps really cares what the Bible actually says---he has his "theology", and it serves him well.

Probably if anyone can unite ultra-right wing conservative fanatics with ultra-left wing liberal fanatics is the so-called Reverend Fred Phelps. One thing he ain't is biased - he hates EVERYONE, whether they be George Bush, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagen, Barack Obabma, it don't matter, he doesn't care if you are white, black, American Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern, from outer space, whatever, you are gonna die and burn in hell, according to his "perfectness". It don't matter if you are a conservative "greatest generation" WWII or Korean vet or a left-wing San Francisco gay, your gonna burn, baby, burn. I don't know why anyone even takes Fred Phelps serious. I think HE (as well as all of us) needs the Lord.

We shouldn't pay any attention to Fred Phelps. His word doesn't count. Better to open up the Bible and read it for yourself rather than to listen to Phelps.

Who do you consider "ultra-right wingers"?

As a Christian myself, I'm not sure whether to be appalled or mildly amused at the stupidity of these people. Trust me, not all people who call themselves Christians are like this! 99% of us are not. God doesn't hate! It seems like the scriptures they quote, while good to listen to (basically they say to listen to your elders, seek knowledge) don't really give any excuse for their hate. They sicken me, honestly.

Anyway, I found this odd and slightly amusing. Trust me, God doesn't hate Omaha. God is not hate.
I am sorry, BUT, 99% of Christians do no come across in the manner. Especially with the recent Catholic church scandal (although I always though a scandal was new news, not something that has been continuiously been going on for generations if not multiple centuries, unchecked). As far as I can tell alot of what public figure heads for the religion, including politicians, do not represent the God of love @ all.

That being said this guy is a whack job. But no more wacky than the LDS church and their beliefs. As long as they are not violent, what can one do? Unfortunatly religions allow a few to represent them and scar their image. It's why a growing # of kids are either athiest or agnostic (largest growing religious demographic amoung youth now)

Also guys the current Bible that you guys read is an interpitation, and ALL sects of the Christian church pick and choose what to believe. If we all followed ALL that the Bible said we should be doing we'd live a lifestyle much closer to Israel or a Muslim country.....

God is love. Jesus preached about LOVE. Jesus wanted people to be disciplined and loving. Fred Phelps preaches hate. Jesus never said to hate. It isn't people that God hates. It is sin. People sin, but Jesus teaches to pray for those persons and to love them anyway. Phelps isn't teaching that.

I agree 100%. But many churches do not teach that first and foremost. They also are not welcoming to all, which Jesus was. Churches can be, and are exclusionary and devisive. Jesus was also a solicialist, which most Christians deplore socialist things.

Too many inconsistancies in general. Phelps is just one among many.

I can list many quotes and actions of very public Christians and clergy that will boggle the mind. Theory is different than reality. And as long as Congrigations allow clergy and management to allow themselves to be misrepresented, then the cycle will continue.

1. Jesus preached a lot about hell. It exists, and w/out him we will all go there. God will judge sin. That is not an excuse to go and spew the hate that phelps and the gang does, though--because I don't see the salvation message that Jesus gives us--I only see mean-spirited judgment.

2. Jesus was not a socialist. He never said personal ownership of property was a bad thing--only that it can hinder our ability to seek God. The idea of requiring work to eat is a very basic Biblical thing--and something that socialism doesn't really address.
