I would talk to the sheriff about the problem first. That way you are on the record.
In reality, we usually end up fixing the fence ourselves to keep the animals off our land. Those type of people see no problem with their animals being on someone elses land, but if your cattle are eating THEIR grass, that is another story. We have had people bring round bales of hay through our gates to feed their cattle on our land.

I would call the sheriff. Let him round them up, put them in the sale barn for storage, and the owner can come get them after he pays the fines and boarding fees. Maybe he will learn to keep his stock home.

Good thing that poor dog is there and I'm here. I'd probably take it, just because people who give away something like that don't deserve it in the first place.

Our neighbors bought this house pretty cheap, fixed it up, put a new roof on it, then sold it *with a nice profit* for a property with more land.
