Hey y'all...I'm returning to the area (finishing grad school), and I'm looking to rent a room(s) within commuting distance. I have found a couple of leads via a legit roommate website, and I'm trying to decide.

One's in Niles, which I'm already familiar with, but it's a bit smaller of a living space.

The other option is a duplex where I'd have my own kitchen, bath, and several rooms, garage, etc. It's in the zip code 44511, which according to the Youngstown 2010 breakdown of areas is on the West Side (Schenley neighborhood). When I checked out the map, it was located off of Bear's Den Rd. and is on Gregory Ave, I believe. This appears to be right by Mill Creek Park and fairly close to Boardman and Canfield.

Any feedback on this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!!

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that is too terrible of a place. There are some nice houses around there.

If it was due East on the other side of the park, I would have said no way.

EDIT
I just looked at some photos of that neighborhood on Bing.com. Bird's eye view is great. Those are your typical Austintown houses built after WWII. Nice looking neighborhood.

Go to http://bing.com click on maps. Put in the address, and then click on aerial view. Bird's eye is the close ups.

Yea, thats still a nice neighborhood over there off Bear's Den, very similar to what you'd find in Austintown. I lived not too far from there and found it to be a safe area.
I agree with S. Range, anything east of the Park is straight-up ghetto and you don't want to go over there!

Thank you for the advice! I wasn't going to look in Youngstown at all, but this listing sounded good to me.

Okay, so I asked for a bit more clarification, and they informed me it's on Indianola Ave and Utilis, which when I checked is on the other side of Mill Creek Park. So that's not a good area then?

Considering you weren't going to look in the city in the first place, you probably wouldn't want to live at this location.

I wasn't going to look there primarily because I lived in the area for about 4 and a half years and know some places in Youngstown are best to avoid. My ex used to advise me where was "ok" to go by myself as a woman (he grew up in YT).

I do like the Boardman/Austintown area, and I like YSU's campus. I just prefer having peace of mind concerning my place of residence.

Well, you could drive by the area at different times of day, (and night) to make your own decision. But, from what I've read on here, (I don't know the area well) I don't think you'd find the peace of mind you're looking for there.

Definitely not! That area, (which is over by where Idora Park and the Foster Theatre used to be) is really ghetto. When looking in Youngstown, stay west of the park and south of Mahoning Ave.

If you want to live close to YSU, consider some places along the 5th Ave. corridor near Crandall Park, there are some decent areas around there, although be careful up there as things can change a lot from block to block up there. Last I knew there were a number of foreclosures that you could pick up cheap, but admittedly, I don't that area that well.
