Hi, we're thinking of staying a few nights near the Amish countryside (Millersburg/Berlin area) in late June,
and wondering what the mosquito situation is in general?
We'll be in the midwest for a wedding and would like to extend the weekend for a getaway the following week. We were going to go to Northern Wisconsin or Michigan, but heard the black flies and mosquitoes are quite troublesome in June.
Are they as bad in Ohio, especially in Holmes County?
We'd love to relax and sit on a porch somewhere, but don't want to get chewed up!

Thanks in advance for any insight or tips.

If you don't mind a little insect repellent, you should be fine. We just went through a colder than usual winter, so hopefully that killed some mosquito eggs. I don't think there is a horrible bug problem here in Ohio. We do have them but I look at them as bird and bat food. I love our birds and bats.

The mosquito problem is bad in Wayne and Holmes counties, especially in the swampy areas. The Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area is located here. At 5000 acres, it is the largest inland marsh in Ohio. We also have biting flies, although whether they are as bad as northern Wisconsin or Michigan, I do not know.

I would recommend a screened porch.

Thanks for the replies, looks like I can't win! LOL! Holmes county looks so pretty!
We rarely take a vacation in summer, but since we're going to a wedding thought we'd make the most of it.
Curious, I seem to remember hearing that mosquitoes are worse as the sun goes down?
Are they less active in the mornings for hiking or other activities?

I know I'm spoiled living where mosquitoes don't form massive armies.

Thank you again.

Mosquitoes tend to be least active during the heat of the day. There are also fewer mosquitoes during a prolonged drought. Heavy rains that saturate the soil cause the population to explode.

Holmes County was the WORST with bugs. That place is so rural that you couldn't breathe for half a second without 2 bugs going up your nose. I used to go outside for 10 minutes, and I would have quite a few bug bites when I got back to the house. Yeah, it's bad out there, and Killbuck has a truck that used to go by and spray every Friday night to get rid of their mosquito issue. I'm so glad I'm not a part of that disgusting county anymore. In Franklin County, I can smell the fresh air, freshly cooked food, and I don't have bugs attacking me every few minutes.
