Akron is doing something right and Toledo seems to have stopped its decline. Cincinnati continues to show its economic depth and breadth. Columbus seems to be stumbling. The decline of finance and some IT probably explains much of this. The 2008 collapse really seems to have changed things.

The article here: The Urbanophile » Blog Archive » Do Unto Localities As You Hate the Federal Government Doing Unto You talks about some of the issues with Indianapolis.

Cincinnatti is 22 and 37 (not 12). Check the link.

These numbers are percentage change private sector job growth and whole private sector growth. In 2011 Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Toldeo. They all posted high "rates of change." Columbus, and many other cities that do not have as high percentage of manufacturing, posted lower rates of growth. Essentially the manufacturing economies added jobs faster in 2011.

But no one is going to suggest that Detroit or Cleveland is a healthier city economically at this point than Columbus or Charlotte etc. Those cities lost more jobs prior and during the recession, had higher unemployment, and years of structural economic change led by a decline in manufacturing. It takes years of growth to reverse years of decline. Cincinnati is more exempt from this than the other Ohio cities as it has been adapting to the economic shift more easily over time.

We already understand exactly what these numbers are. Your 'interpretation' is not necessary. A job is a job. All jobs 'count'. Getting more and better jobs is the challenge we all face individually and collectively. Manufacturing jobs are jobs. They count. A $50,000 per year job, is a $50,000 per year job. From November 2010 to December 2011 the number of jobs in cincinnati fell from 1,120,000 to 1,100,000 while columbus' total job numbers fell from 972,000 to 946,000. Even Indy the 'job miracle' went only from 888,000 to 891,000. No profound difference here. We needs jobs. The creation of jobs is happening in different patterns than it has in the past. That is the story here. No place is immune to these changes.
