OK, now that we've established that Reston doesn't deserve to be called "chi chi" that leads us to the next logical question:

Just which areas around here are chi chi?

BTW according to the dictionary the definition of chi chi is: "showily trendy, affectedly elegant; pretentious." Synonyms are flashy, ostentatious, and flamboyant.

Some parts of McLean, maybe? Although McLean doesn't really seem trendy to me. Maybe Georgetown?

I'm thinking you picked the wrong metropolitan area for this question.

Not McLean, except for maybe the Tysons Galleria (if that's in McLean rather than Vienna). Although the gated "Evans Farm" community comes pretty close (were the developers thinking they were building in Rancho Del Tysons instead of NoVa?).

Maybe parts of Logan Circle, Penn Quarter and Del Ray (for different reasons):

- Logan Circle because of all the loft-style condominiums (they couldn't actually convert an old factory in DC to an apartment building, so they had to build new buildings that look like converted old buildings)?

- Penn Quarter because it has the trendiest restaurants.

- Del Ray because it has the most small shops that have "artisan" this or that (plus I'm jealous of the ice cream place there so I'll just rag on it).

Good point, it is sort of like asking which parts of NOVA are flamboyant. NOVA just isn't a flashy kind of place.

Do some of you just post threads now trying to "bait" me into another debate because you're bored? I'm not taking it, so sorry to disappoint you. I maintain that there are plentiful parts of NoVA where people are affluent and like to impress that fact upon others, including parts of Reston.

That wasn't my intent in posting on this thread. Please try and have some fun, Scran-Barre, and don't assume every thread is directly or indirectly about you. When you assume the contrary, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Scran-Barre, as a courtesy to you and the moderators I REFRAINED from posting the response that first popped into my head. I hope you've had a better day today. I mean that sincerely.

I'm with JEB77 - I haven't really seen any area of D.C. metro that I'd call chichi, aside from *maybe* parts of Georgetown. Of course, it's entirely possible that D.C. metro residents, pragmatic as they are, prefer to show their wealth through their automobiles rather than, say, fanatical attention to the "communal"/public parts of their neighborhoods. And since I'm more-or-less car oblivious, such efforts fail to impress me.

In DC, the measure to impress is not a 'chi chi area' or a fancy car but 'Intellectual Overbearance' It goes something to the effect of, "OH I have my JD from Penn and MY MBA from Thunderbird but I'm mainly concentrating on my Foundation work and Political Therorizing"
Ugh...
