Hi,

My aunt had a stroke last week and is currently in stable condition at Inova Fairfax. We were told to start looking for a tertiary care facility to transfer her to in the next week or so. The 2 that were recommended were Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington and Inova Mt. Vernon in Alexandria. We've visited both to take a look and they look fine superficially (i.e. cleanliness, type of facilities, etc.). What we don't have an idea of is the level of care and attention from the staff, which is critical since my aunt has partial paralysis (can't walk) and needs to be trained to regain mobility. Does anyone here have an opinion on either?

Thanks!

For what it's worth, I had an outpatient procedure at VHC-A recently, and was very impressed with the staff's professionalism and kindness.

Mt Vernon is nationally recognized for its rehab program. I would def send any loved one of mine there since that's their specialty.

My father was in rehab at Mount Vernon in 2007 after a fall and brain injury. We were very happy with the care he received there.

VHC is an excellent facility and recently rated #1 in Virginia for patient satisfaction. I also know they are accredited by CARF International for both the Inpatient Rehab Hospital Program and the Rehab Stroke Specialty Program. CARF stands for the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and is designed "to promote the quality, value and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process and continuous improvement services that center on enhancing the lives of persons served."
