I never noticed until recently how many cars in my parking lot, on the side streets where I live have expired tags of one or all three for VA. These are people driving off the apt. lot daily and I guess it amazes me that you would do this on a daily basis. I'm also amazed how long you can actually get away with it. One person has Sept 2012 registration tags and another has a county tag from 2012 as well.

Maybe there is a shortage of police but I live one block from the Arlington police station.

Is this becoming the norm or am I behind...

I had out of state tags for about 3 years in Arlington, haha. I only recently got VA plates and county stickers because I sold that car and bought a new one.

Right, I get that but these aren't out of state tags. They are all registered in Va.

Not sure about Arlington, but PWC did away with their county sticker. They still charge you for the sticker but don't mail you a replacement one. So I have one that's a few years old on my vehicle. The cops around here are pretty good about spotting expired safety and registration tags, especially if you take the I95 HOV lanes.

For the county/city sticker, I'm not sure. I realized my grandmother was driving around for a while with her old one and didn't get a ticket or anything. (She had the new sticker, just didn't put it on.)

As for the inspection sticker, I doubt you'll last long. I was pulled over on the first day after expiration, on my way to the inspection station. The pi - errr - "officer" pressured me heavily to "just pay the fine" (which he said was $200 - completely outrageous) but I went to court and had it dismissed.

If I let my out of state tags expire before I get a VA registration, can the police here write me a ticket for the dead tags?

You can be cited for invalid tags or for failing to obtain Va tags if you are living here and are not military.

For the County sticker, it wouldn't be the police but the county tax office. You're required to have one whether your car is worth enough to be taxed or not. Re. the other stickers, I doubt they'd bother going into an apartment parking lot to ticket just for that, but I'm sure the police could do so if they wanted. If you tell them there are a lot of such cars, maybe they'll think it's worth their while.
