I guess it is my lucky day AT around 7h40am this morning , a Loudoun county cop was in front of me and just driving slowly, he then pulled on the side and as soon as I passed him, he put his lights on. Came to my window and told me I had an expired registration and inspection and gave me 2 summons! I am going to get the inspection done ASAP, but does anyone has any experience with these? This is my 1s time getting an inspection/registration ticket. Are they expensive? Is it worth going to court to have them dismissed?. I guess that's what I get for procrastinating

Why would you think going to court would get them dismissed? You would only work to get something dismissed if you felt you had valid reasons for not having either one of them done (i.e., you've been out of the state for an extended period).

Pay the tickets and take care of it. I have to ask: How does one let their registration expire. You can do this right online. You don't have to go anywhere, stand in line, take any tests, etc.

I know it's not an excuse, but I seriously did not know that I had to get the car inspected every year. This is my first year living in VA and my ex-husband used to take care of all car issues, i never did an inspection/registration before and we recently got separated, and I just did not think about it

Get both done asap, not days before court, and call the deputy. Ask if he would consider marking them CWL (Complied with law) if you show him the new tags and inspection receipt. He may say you'll have to go to court for that but I would ask anyway. They may not accept this as a CWL but I would try anyway.

Thank you, I will try this. Do I have to speak to the cop who pulled me over?

Just a tip for future driving in VA. If you are doing anything wrong or have any expired tags, you are never safe - whether you are driving past a cop or behind it. They are always checking.

My tip is to avoid cops at all costs. If I see one driving behind me for any amount of time, I will just make a turn ASAP into a parking lot or something. It is worth wasting a few minutes off my route than risking getting a ticket in VA.

My other tip is to avoid wasting time in court unless you know you will win and if the time wasted in court is worth the ticket price. It is hard to beat a ticket in court - actually I never have lol.

He was driving in front of me lol so I guess he ran my plates on his computer or something because there is no way he could've known they were expired by driving in front of me. He probably ran them and then pulled aside to let me pass him and stop me right away The thing is I don't know yet how much the tickets are going to cost, so it will depend on that. I read online someone said his was going to cost $250 but he went to court and got it dismissed by showing his new inspection to the judge. I have 2 of them and the costs are not showing up yet on the Loudoun County Traffic website

Wow - wouldn't it just be easier to not do anything wrong?

The tickets will be cheap compared to what the inspection may uncover. Those folks always find something that needs to be repaired. If you go to court, be prepared to answer the judge when asked why you didn't know the inspection was over due when you stare at the inspection sticker every time you drive your car.
