Anyone live near a VRE station? Is there lots of noise to deal with? Considering buying a home near one so slightly concerned.

How close is the house to the station/tracks? I live about 3 miles away from one and I don't hear a thing.

i live less than 1 mile and i don't notice much. we do hear trains frequently, we all love the sounds of trains. i'd take that over the helicopters further north that i've seen comments about any day. occasionally i hear the loudspeaker announcements from the station but nothing that bothers me. my boys can actually tell me if a train is a VRE, Amtrak, or CSX just by hearing it. pretty cool if you ask me. there is something nostalgic about trains that i just love!!! we sleep w/ our windows open sometimes and the trains never wake me up. you get used to them.

We live less than a mile away and the noise isn't bothersome. We do hear the trains, but not late at night and nothing shakes in our home (like we used to feel the subway in NYC).

In most of NoVA, VRE runs on freight track so you're more likely to notice a heavy freight rumbling through at odd hours than a VRE train which would normally run during commuite hours.

I should have also mentioned that the VRE helps us keep track of time in the morning.

I live 1/2 mile from Burke Center station. We'll hear the whistles from the VRE trains, but the freight trains are louder by far.

That said, the trains are not that frequent and not really a nuisance.

You really get used to things like that. I live under the flight path for National and hardly notice the planes at all unless they're making an unusual noise. The trucks rumbling along the highway behind my house are louder. I actually wish I could hear train whistles from here.

Default VRE is OK, Freight trains not so much

I live quite close (about 1/8 mile) where the VRE runs through. I can hear the train whistles and other train noise in the morning and in the evening. It doesn't bother me but if you are a light sleeper, it may bother you. I found that the VRE and Amtrak noise isn't too too bad but the freight train noise is terrible. VRE and Amtrak share tracks with the freight companies so you should really check on that.
