Im new to the Nova area and will be transferring from work in a month. I am looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment/housing. I am looking to spend no more than $1300. My work is located in Centreville while my husband will be working in Arlington.

Since I will have our only car, we are trying to find something that will be within walking distance to the Vienna/fairfax metro, or we are looking for a place that might provide a shuttle to the metro as well. All suggestions are much appreciated.

I would consider the Fair Lakes area, in the heart of Fairfax County. There are several apartment complexes in that area. They have the Fair Lakes shuttle service, which stops by several apartment complexes (see the ones listed on bus schedule) and then onward to the Vienna metro station. Fair Lakes is very close to Centreville and pretty convenient to the metro. I'm a big proponent of using the bus services to get to the metro rather than having to live w/in steps of a metro station when budget is an issue.

+1 to this. Also, fairfax connector bus service can give you access to the metro on those times that are outside of the shuttle times. However, bus service is more limited on weekends.

Also, $1300 will get you a good 1 bedroom in the fair lakes area. There are some older ones that are around the $1100-1200 range though. 2 bedrooms will push into at least $1500. If you rent from a private owner, then you could probably get lower.

I helped you, so please help me in return.

Question strictly out of curiosity: Why are you both transferring here?

Again, my reasons for this question are for my future strategies in life and information gathering to make that next move. I will completely respect your reasoning whatever it is.

The job market in the field that I am in is saturated up in the NYC metro area, and since I found a position here in NOVA, we are making the move. Since I am actually making more money than my husband, it seemed best that we make the move to Virginia. My husband was working in NY and since his company has a branch in Arlington, he will be able to transfer down here as well but will be coming down later than me..

Thanks so much for your help. No kidding, I have a friend up in NYC who also struggled but he eventually found a job.

I wish you and your husband the best with the move. Also, the fair lakes/fair oaks area is suburban but I found it to be walkable and very convenient to any kind of shopping. Most of NoVA on the other hand is car centric. Nightlife is the biggest disadvantage but I don't think this will be an issue for you.

A co-worker rents a 1 bedroom condo in Acadia across the street from the Vienna Metro for $1300.
