We have a Cox package for phone + Internet + cable.

In the 2-ish months we've had Cox, we've already had a bunch of times where the phone is dead (no dial tone) and the Internet's down. Not to mention the TV probs. I've had it!

What is a better, more reliable alternative in NoVa?

I've had cable and internet through Verizon for the last 2 months and haven't had any problems at all with it yet. It seems like there are only a limited amount of providers in certain areas of NOVA however. For instance, I have Verizon and Cox available to me in Springfield, but my friend in Alexandria only has Comcast available. You can use a site such as this one to check what providers are available in your area: Order Cable or Satellite TV Service from Leading TV Companies | Compare Television Service through ConnectMyCable

Two soup cans and a piece of string. A very long piece of string.

Weird--we've had cox internet for nearly a year now with no issues. Every once in a while it goes down, but unplugging/replugging in the router solves it. That's our equipment's fault though, not Cox's.

Satellite is an option for TV. We found Dish to be cheaper than cable, though it does go out in massive storms.

We've had bundled Verizon FiOs without any problems. My issue with any provider is that phone, internet, and TV service is more than I wish I had to spend, but the only option is to put an antenna on the roof again, get slow dial up internet, and take the laptop to a Wifi facility every day.

I've had horrible problems with Verizon. We have phone and internet (not fios.) They took 5 weeks to get me a working phone line. Our phone line frequently has horrible static. Sometimes I pick it up and there is no dial tone at all. I'd switch to comcast for internet if they'd put in a line!

This reminds me of what I went through with Verizon

another positive FIOS experience. I don't like the monthly bill, but it is what it is. I LOVE the multi-room DVR and the On Demand service on the TV. We had DirecTV before for our TV and the dish went out every time there was a storm.

It depends where you are though - not every community in NoVA has FIOS service.

You do NOT want Comcast. I have endured many weeks of intermittent service interruptions, had multiple visits to repair the problem (requiring me to miss work), and many, many contradictory statements from Comcast about what the alleged problem(s) are. If the neighborhood had FIOS I would go for it; switching to a slow DSL and satellite will be a major hassle, and my neighbors haven't been thrilled with either of these services. So there does not appear to be a good alternative.

We have had verizon for DSL internet and our phone service since Aug with no problems. We have had directtv for quite a few years now and saw no reason to switch
