My Husband and I are looking to move to the Clarks Summit/Waverly Area. We just found out that there is a lawsuit against one of the local factories for dumping TCE and PCE and wells are affected by this. Should I not look in these areas? If the well we are looking at does not have the chemical now, can the well have it later down the road? Are there any long term/short term effects? If the children playing in the yard can they be effected with the soil and air or this toxin? Are there any know cases of Illness from this? This has me rethinking this area. Please let me know your thoughts.

DNAPL contamination is very difficult to generalize about in groundwater. But it should not be a soil contaminant offsite unless you happen to be very close, maybe right across the property line fence where something might have flowed over in a storm.

So should I continue to look in this area or look somewhere else? Should I let this be a concern of mine?

Does anyone live where there well has been contaminated? if so, does this bother you physically and mentally knowing that this Chemical is in your water? Also, what flirtation do you use?

SOME OF THE WELLS IN THE AREA ARE CONTAMINATED-----i would avoid all well water---some of the area is on the downside of a major landfill---such as property on newton ransom blvd--especially towards the ransom area

The most recent letter to residents on that web page lists contacts for the DEP, maybe they are worth calling to get a sense of the current status. After all, they work for you, and many of these folks do remember that.

My general supposition is that the wells in the area are drilled into relatively deep fractured bedrock, although that's not confirmed by the information DEP provides on that website. If the wells with detected contamination are relatively shallow, say driven wells into gravel above perched tight bedrock, then vapor intrusion into basements could be possible even from DNAPL. Usually chlorinated solvents sink to the bottom of the contaminated area and flow through bedrock channels or on top of bedrock.

From what I can see the new water line extension would interrupt the most likely contamination pathway. But vapor intrusion could still be a possibility. Direct soil contamination would be unlikely unless you were right near the site and had dirt run from there onto your property of interest during rain events.

You could potentially hire an engineer or hydrogeologist familiar with the particular area, and make any purchase offer contingent on a satisfactory report - analogous to a home inspection.
