Last night I watched an episode of X-files that I had recorded. The episode is called "Arcadia" and it's about an HOA to the extreme. Just had to laugh at the extremes in the neighborhood in the episode. Kinda puts things in perspective. Just hope there's no HOA's out there as bad as this (without the x-files monster of course).
Ah well, I myself have chosen to move to a neighborhood with an HOA, for reasons similar to other posters above.
Here in NY if you have a pool, by law you must have a fence - as for areas, I imagine it is very specific as it appears each sub-division has their own little rules and regulations...
Yeah, I'm in NJ and here you need a six foot fence around any pool, but everywhere I am looking in North Carolina, it seems you are not allowed to have an inground pool or backyard fence...????

Huh?
I know many friends in Raleigh and Durham who have inground pools in their yard. Also know a good number who have backyard fences.
Oh...are you talking about HOAs again? None of those friends live in a neighborhood with an HOA so maybe that's why.
Who runs the HOA? Is is the people who live there? Who sets the fees and determines if they get raised, is there a vote?
we have the people who live here run it. The builders made up the rules.
the people do not get paid, except the treasure who handles the money. he geets his dues free for doing this job.
What I don't like about it is that any improvements to your lot have to be approved and they have 30 days to do it.
I'm with you on that one. If I want to paint the exterior of my house, I have to get approval. I'm not a big fan of the covenants that reference home improvements, but other than that I guess the rest is okay.
What areas (if any) in North Carolina (near Raleigh or Charlotte, preferably) allow you to put a fence and/or inground pool in your backyard?
That answer can be very broad because there has to be hundreds of subdivisions and each one that has its own HOA will dictate whether fences/pools are allowed. Once you narrow down what subdivisions you like to be in, ask the question or even ask to get a copy of their restrictive covenants. This way you know what you would be getting yourself into before you sign.
