Mebane is a small town 20 miles away from Chapel Hill and it is booming. Lot's of commuters living there now. One of my old friends built a home in a subdivision there about 5 years ago (actually her mailing address is Haw River but she is right at Mebane). She purchased a 2 1/2 acre wooded lot for $ 29,000 and it is absolutely gorgeous! I don't know alot about the schools there. Her kids were attending a new elementary school in Mebane and she is very persnickity as far as her kids go. There's also a good charter school in the area which another one of my friends' children attend.
If you go to Realtor.com and enter this mls # you can see an example of one of the homes for sale in her subdivsion : MLS ID#: 54104 - it's the property located on 309 Great Smoky Mt. Dr. (PS - I am NOT a realtor )
If you like small town living, yet want to work in or be near Chapel Hill, check Mebane out.
309 GSM is in Mill Creek! That is where I live. LOVE it and I am a realtor....
One important aspect of Mebane is the city government. The taxes are very low but the city is beautifully maintained and offers a variety of high-quality services to its residents. It boasts a strong parks and recreation department, stringent planning and zoning ordinances, a comprehensive pedestrian/greenway/bikeway plan is in being developed along with a public art program! Already in place is a wellness initiative called Mebane On The Move which was created in partnership with The Mebane Women's Club and Duke University and offers nutrition and fitness classes, a city trail system and a community garden. Honestly, Mebane's proximity to UNC and Duke fosters a more progressive and creative mindset than is evident in the rest of Alamance County.
It's a great place to be!
