100 legislators signed a letter requesting that the Department of the Interior block the Catawba casino proposed for Cleveland County that will provide thousands of jobs. Remember this at election time when the jobs, jobs, jobs chant is all you hear from them.

The letter: Who in Raleigh opposes county resort plans? (read the letter from Raleigh and who signed it) - Local - The Shelby Star

Eh, the casino wouldn't be in town.

I voted to allow casinos in Atlantic City. My parents voted against it. They were irate that I had voted for it. I told them: If you don't like casinos, don't go. The jobs are needed.

The point of this thread is that the jobs, jobs, jobs people want to kill jobs. Whether you like or loathe casinos has nothing to do with it.

Whether people like Casinos and the quality of life the bring or don't bring has everything to do with it. Job Jobs Jobs at any expense by politicians shows lack of perspective. It's like the people who get all folksy and talk about the good old days of tobacco farming and all the kids it put through college.

I'm from NJ too. Atlantic city is a dump. I can't imagine any county in NC looking towards AC as something to strive for.

this.

I want jobs as much as the next guy, but this is one instance where I'm glad our stodgy general assembly killed the idea.

Casinos breed depravity. I'm looking for a future with *less* depravity.

A small government legislature would have decriminalized gambling.

AC is wonderful now compared to before the casinos. Pre-casinos there were people living there trying to raise families on seasonal work & unemployment. The casinos brought stability. That was the purpose there. It worked. It served the purpose.

I agree with you on a lot of things, but not this. This would be thousands of jobs keeping people out of Charlotte jobs. Casinos also have some finance jobs. This is a regional win.

It ain't dead, yet. Attorney, legislator discusses proposed resort project - Local - The Shelby Star

This will get thousands of people back to work, paying taxes & will pump millions into the state coffers to help with things like the education budget.

Thousands back to work... So would legalizing prostitution, but everyone has a line somewhere. Mine is gambling. Same for the stupid lottery.

That's all well & good, but people in Gastonia & Kings Mountain are elated.

Would you feel the same if the casino was proposed for Mecklenburg? Mecklenburg was in the running.

None of the local politicians signed the letter. I would hope that if the situation involved the Lumbees that they would not sign the letter.

There are lots of links in the thread on the Charlotte board.

The reason that I posted this on this board is that politicians are trying to kill jobs. Mr. Tillis has people in his district who would benefit from the casino.
