Yeah,,,I don't think Kroger had enough brand awareness to survive in the NC market...where Food Lion's are everywhere and Harris Teeters are everywhere in some cities. There are 4 Harris Teeters within a few mile radius of me, 3 Food Lions, 2 Lowes Foods and a Wal Mart (not counting a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, etc..)....how on earth could 1 Kroger survive in that saturation....why would I go there?
This seems to be a more natural way of getting market share for Kroger....while HT has higher prices, they also have nicer stores...probably than Kroger stores in most cases. So if Kroger can come in and lower prices a bit, that seems like a good strategy.

There are Kroger stores in the eastern part of the state.

That's the $64,000 question. They're shutting stores here but pushed Bottom Dollar into the Philadelphia market, where 3 chains are closing stores.
Just my opinion, but I think that the clincher for Kroger is that it gets them to Delaware. Once they settle this, they will probably put in a distribution center in Philadelphia or Wilmington, DE & then it will be a scramble by Food Lion & Kroger to hit the NYC market when A&P finally bites the dust.

Sadly, yes. I didn't know it until they bought Pathmark shortly before I moved here. They are destroying their own stores, Super Fresh, & Pathmark. It's a shame.
Right now the Philadelphia market is a shambles. It's so bad right now that you can see posts on the South Jersey board & Philadelphia board that people are glad to see Bottom Dollar.
Wow, I had never heard of Bottom Dollar. Apparently, they are all over the Mid-Atlantic, from North Carolina to New Jersey.
