Is there really an art of "appearing happy" when you're around people, even if you're usually not happy?

Yes, I think it's called not raining on someone else's picnic.

I don't think anyone want's to be a Debbie/Donald Downer nor be around one.

I wouldn't say there's an "art" to it...you just learn that sometimes it's necessary. Some are better at it than others and have to use it more.

Not sure if that's what you were looking for or not

I don't really agree with the basic notion that people really act all that happy in public. When I go to the grocery store, post office, shopping mall or whatever I typically see as many scowls as smiles. I'm generally friendly and courteous by nature but I don't go walking around smiling like an imbecile either. The other day when I mailed a package from the post office there were 7 or 8 people in line. The employees were going out of their way to be friendly to the customers but almost everyone in the line seemed grumpy and didn't even respond when asked how they were doing today. I would hate to have to deal with the public in any job just because there are so many rude and disagreeable people. So to answer the question I don't think that people in public seem to be the happy campers that the OP suggests they are.

OP, if you think everyone's happy, you should take a customer service job.

Then you'll see what a bunch of miserable, whining, lying, ungrateful, selfish people humans really are.

You seem to have a few threads, you seem to be "trying to find yourself" or something.

If you are, then stop analyzing, and asking questions.

Don't think, just be.

When you're comfortable with being, it'll all fall into place.

I see quite the opposite, maybe its where I live, but especially around Christmas, some people look as if I would make their day by putting a slug in their head.

Just bc you don't walk around with your troubles on your sleeve everyday, don't assume they don't have any. It's maturity and character.
