MySpace was popular early in the social media culture that defined Facebook. The site itself was annoying, but I found it more approachable and far less pretentious. "Tom" set the tone for the site-- he was a guy with a plain t-shirt in a blank room.
Society in general is completely different as well. The "smartphone" as we know it today, enabling 60/24/7/365 access to your SN profile, wasn't even released yet.
I was on Facebook with hundreds of friends for several years. Got tired of all the politics between the various social groups I overlap with. Purged the whole thing. I do feel a bit left out not hearing about the goings on of former classmates and that would be the one thing that would tempt me to go back on again.
Social media for professional reasons is good and fine.
I just got rid of Facebook a few weeks ago and I don't even think about Facebook at all anymore. I found myself on Facebook too much. I don't miss it at all.
Definitely thought to do this occasionally. Instead of deleting social media (which I have contemplated) I leave it alone for a while and let it go dormant or even go into lurk mode. I have a few distant friends who prefer FB over email nowadays, so I prefer not to completely delete the FB account. I use Linkedin, and on occasion Twitter. Twitter, I have left my account dormant for several months. Linkedin and Twitter are tied into work-related activities. I keep FB completely separate from anything work-related.
I always keep at least one Facebook open, just to snoop and be nosey.
