That excuse is pretty lame. I'm an entomologist by training, though in a different field of biology now, and a weirder bunch of people who "see the world differently than most people" you'd be hard-pressed to find in any profession. And when I was a young graduate student many of the older ones were very helpful to me in getting my career in gear, and I'm STILL FRIENDS with them (the ones who haven't passed away, at least) decades later. They were "useful" to me, but I didn't just "use" them, because they had other traits that made them worth maintaining a friendship with.
You've complained before about how your neighbors won't talk to you at the mailbox, but yet you also posted once that you like to say outrageous things to people just to see how they'll react. Is it that hard to make the connection?
