Pretty much any place you choose has some sort of trail or outdoor activity nearby. Were you thinking of a specific part of the ADKs? (it is a very large area, after all) near a particular town?

I recently camped at Brown Tract Pond near Raquette Lake and liked it very much for a canoeing sort of vacation, but it is not in the high peaks.

Why go all the way to the Adirondacks?

The Catskills offer all those things. Lots of hiking... lots of waterfalls... world class trout streams.
Plus a shorter drive.

Fair enough. I don't know how far a 4-5 hour drive from NYC will get you, but in the southern Adirondacks, I can think of two places to recommend-

T Lake Falls near Piseco Lake is a wonderful trip that has a little bit of everything.

West Canada Lakes (west of Indian Lake) is awesome too. Hike in, fish and swim, camp in lean-tos. Don't know about waterfalls, though. If you can lug a kayak in, even better. I've seen fisherman put canoes/kayaks on a two-wheeled "trailer" and walk them along the trails to their lakeside campsites.

Post Ok..............here's a link or two.........

Go to adk.com

Should let you browse hiking trail info, camping, and fishing, and waterfall info.........for more specific info I like Indian Lake...........Indian Lake, Blue Mountain Lake and Sabael, the Adirondack Vacation Four Season destination and Adirondacks Speculator Region and of course Welcome to Saranac Lake, New York!

there is an awesome space of NOTHING except old fashioned life including a boat on Raquette Lake that still delivers mail occasionally to the island residents and also has the beautiful Blue Mountain Lake Museum with lots of background and ADK history and geology plus Buttermilk Falls really close by with lots of still elegant great camps......like the ones the Vanderbilts and uber-rich had in the 20's........restored and still most in use complete with fancy boathouses right on the water to store those old mahogany boats.....amazing stuff IMO
