I started a thread asking basically the same thing, without realizing this one was still active! What I've learned so far, from asking local building owners in the city of Newburgh, is that poor infrastructure (water/sewage/electricity) and ridiculously strict building codes keep the city depressed. It's difficult to make money when your water costs thousands of dollars a year (not joking), and even routine maintenance on buildings is a huge hassle. This gets passed along to tenants in the form of high rent prices. Everybody stays poor.
If Newburgh can fix these issues, it will be a great place to live. Right now it's questionable.
Talk about a walk down memory lane. I grew up living out near Stewart AFB in the 50's. I attended Liberty Street School for a couple of years. We used to walk down to a little corner delicatessen (heading down in the direction of the river on Renwick St.) about a block away for lunch. Can you imagine..... elementary kids walking a block from school during lunch hour to buy a cream soda and a baloney sandwich, then getting back to school.
I recently saw where it was purchased by private investor to repurpose/restore Liberty Street School. I would guess it could be a historic landmark.
My cousin stayed on in Newburgh after discharge from the AFB and opened a coin laundromat in town. He died several years back and I think the family sold off the place.
Thanks for letting me ramble about joyous childhood memories.
Newburgh Restoration? Part of the reason I went there. Great site. I would go back to the site every few years to keep updated on what was going on. Check out below. It’s mostly Real Estate investors but some of the people on that thread have rehabbed many homes in Newburgh.
This is a good site for people looking to rehab buildings in the city and some of the other cities in the state have the same or similar program: https://www.newburghcommunitylandbank.org/
