This historical reference born and raised in Poughkeepsie is credited as the first black female graduate of Yale Law School and judge in the United States all by the age of 31. She graduated from Poughkeepsie High School at the age of 15 and later from Wellesley College. Her father was a lawyer in Poughkeepsie and they are descendants of a long time black family in the Hudson Valley, with her grandfather growing up in Dover Plains. He was a graduate of Williams College, where he was that institution’s first black student.
