Check out the Hudson Valley. You can find small town living, mountains, snow, and four seasons. Manhattan just an hour plus, skiing the same, great ocean beaches less then 2 hours..........all depends on budget and you can find all you mentioned in your post.

Taxes are on the high side in most areas in NY, that would be a big concern IMO, I know you want to get away from the midwest but it may be more affordable (I heard recently that OK and KS are very affordable, not sure how much hiking there is there though). What about TN?, it's hilly, they get some snow and if you relocate near a big city, there s/b a hospital close by. There may be some humidity and it may not have everything you're looking for but if it has most of what you're looking for, you might want to consider it. Good luck.

Honeycrisp-your comment is irrelevant to the original poster. If they wanted TN or KS they'd have posted over there.

Thanks for your input HomerBrink but actually my post was not irrelevant since the OP recently mentioned the midwest in another thread about relocating (although not here), anyway it was just a suggestion.

Rockland is centrally located in what you are looking for but rent wise you are looking at around 1500 for a two bedroom, nice area, schools etc
What is your budget like? Does your husband have a job waiting for him or both of you?
Good luck

Talking Since your concerns are family.....

affordable housing costs, mountains (Adirondacks are a skip away) for hiking, canoeing, fishing, camping, want GREAT schools, and great health care........We have a great local hospital and just across the lake is Burlington, VT with a whole different vibe and a "huger" hospital. You like snow and we have a couple of great ski areas just for families and there are pets everywhere here with a lot of great vets. It might be worth checking out............If you were single and looking for nightlife......whole different story, but if you want apple pie (no kidding -we have lots of pick your own apple orchards, strawberry fields, pumpkin fields, etc.), friendly neighborhoods, great schools and totally family atmosphere and activities for your kids and areas safe enough for them to walk around in day or night.........you should at least check out Pburgh.............
